Phillipine and her 2 year old daughter, Augusta, started for America in 1845 on a ship with a Castro party. Phillipine's daughter was born out of wedlock, and she named her after Phillipine mother's family which was von Langenhagen.
Phillipine Auguste Tampke was the daughter of a professional family in which there were several doctors. She was born in Wolfenbüttel, Braunschweig, Germany on September 3, 1815. Six of the Tampke family moved to America and three stayed in Germany. The three which remained were doctors and they never married, dedicating their life to medicine. Her parents were Johann August Christoph Tampke and Louise Johanna Wilhemina Langenhagen. Later Phillipine Tampke, nee von Langenhagen and Fritz Mumme were married and lived on a farm at Vandenberg, Texas.
Phillipine was very disillusioned with life in America and finally solved her problem by going to bed and remaining there until her death eight years later.
The home of Fritz and Phillipine still stands on the old home place, and the graves of these two early Texans are side by side on the bank of the creek running by their old home.

We have learned that the correct spelling of her name was "Phillipine" and is the name on her tombstone. She was born Sep. 03 1815 and died Aug. 17 1899. She is buried on the land where she had lived.
Stories have been told, handed down to younger ones, about parts of her life. One story tells of her long red hair and as this was an oddity to the indians they would sit for hours listening to her play the guitar and sing.
My father, her grandson, tells of her becoming bedridden and the grand children bringing her pecans from trees by the creek close to their home and polishing the nicest and giving them to visiting children.
She and her husband Fredrich (Fritz) had a very turbulent marriage and divorced in 1874 even though both stayed on the homestead.

(1) Mrs. L.W. Mumme's notes indicated the name of Fritz' wife was Philamene, but her descendants state her name was actually Phillipine.
