Family sources (Karoline Gebhardt) says, he is the son of George Gottlieb Gebhardt (married Mary Zimmerman) . So for a while we will give Karl two fathers until we have found out the truth.
Karoline Gebhardt told of her father Mathias Bertsch working at a mill with a large water wheel. The action of the water wheel killed a lot of fish and he took the fish home for his family to eat. Karoline could never eat any fish after that. Karoline also talked of working a a cigar factory in Karlshue (Karlsruhe?), Germany
