17. November 1845, Kuba

that it flew forward like an arrow and cut the blustering waves with such force that they, roaring and foaming, sprayed their water out on the deck and soaked to the skin the startled people who were there. So we sailed swiftly and passed close to the island of Cuba which here becomes level, in that the mountain ranges running along the strand sunk away to wave-like mounds and permitted a far view of the island, which appeared to be, as far as the eye could reach, covered with green woods. We turned northwest around a corner, where the sea forms an endless bay far into the island. With the swift course of our Neptune we soon lost all land from sight and floated, surrounded by blustering waves, once more between sky and water toward our destination. Deep in thought, I stood on deck on the high side of the ship looking into the foaming waves and often wetted over and over by them. I remembered the dear old homeland and all of the dear ones and friends remaining behind, how they may be celebrating the Lord’s Day today, and how they, coming out of God's House, joyfully sit at the well-laden table and consume their noon meal with ease, while we here do not go hungry, but still have to satisfy ourselves only with highly salted food and cannot even refresh ourselves with a drink of fresh, cool, spring water. How happy my dear friends in Brosowo must feel today at the celebration of their common church dedication festival. Oh! is my dear son August also among them? or is he already far from his relatives and gone into his position as a teacher?-How many years was I a joyful participant in it? And now? How much have the circumstances changed? In the immeasurable distance, which separates me from my loved ones, I do not even get to taste delicious plum cake!
