Dezember 1845

a close space that., when they have made their beds in a circle, have to lay with their feet entwined, and cannot set the chests with their belongings inside, but have to separately store their things. We do not need to do this now, because our dwelling is spacious enough to accommodate us and our things and to protect us from the destructive influence of the weather. Also, we are living far more agreeably and cooler during the warm days than those people in the tents wherein they are disturbed by intolerable heat. In this manner, we continued our lifestyle daily since the 22nd of December, 1845, and at present already live in a company of 2,200 people, all German emigrants, whose number is still increased weekly by arrivals from Galveston, where now 800 to 1000 people are still said to be quartered, and some ships are still awaited from Europe, which have not landed there yet. Our rations are supplied by the Society; the portions are delivered singly for every person or every family based on the number of heads, generally, according to how each one wishes, weekly for seven to eight days, only the meat, which would not keep here so long during the warm days, is apportioned out every two days, and 4 to 5 heavy oxen used for this purpose. A person receives weekly 1/2 pound coffee, daily one pound fresh beef, and what is certainly necessary, vegetables, such as peas, and of course, either yellow or green or gray ones, cracked beams, pot-barley, rice, and lentils, and earlier, also sauerkraut in adequate portions. We used to receive coarse ship's biscuit which we had brought along on the ship from Europe; when this was consumed, fine ones of wheat flour were apportioned, and when these, too, were consumed; corn (Indian corn) or the so-called Turkish wheat was provided in place of bread. A person receives one pound of this daily, which 13 ground in the grinders adequately provided by the Society, sifted, and then daily baked into a type of cake in an iron corn pot and eaten fresh with coffee and meat dishes.
