feeling out of a mania of destruction, for the stem, although 6 to 8 or even more inches in diameter freed of its long sharp pointed reed-like evergreen leaves, still is so spongy and sappy that it absolutely cannot be used for fuel. Also the other kinds of cactus, which with wide, thorny leaves, of which one leaf sets upon another and at the same time grows out of it, which in the homeland is very often grown in flower pots, is everywhere at hand here in signiñcant size, so that its wide, long and 1 inch thick thorny leaves often blocks the way of the traveler and makes it necessary for him to take out another path in order not to be stuck by the thorns.
