grapevines, and berries of all kinds bring forth their fruits in abundance in season and gladden the human heart through enjoying them. A cleaner mountain air strengthens and sustains people's health, as experienced by the inhabitants of the city of New Braunfels, founded last year, whose 700 inhabitants from the founding until now have only 13 graves to show; the purest spring and river water of the most pleasant and pure taste serves them for refreshing enjoyment, for cleansing and for satisfying countless needs. The ground, which promises a rich gain, is so made up that it can be made tillable with the expanding of little strength, as one converts to this use the rich prairie land free of all wood and covered only with rich and lush grass, which for its first cultivating requires no more toil and strain than the working of an acre in Europe which has lain fallow for a few years. The greatest toil to make ground tillable is indisputably the fencing which one must give it, if one wants to realize a gain from the cultivation. The northers herein winter are not colder or unfriendlier than the northwinds in the old homeland at the time of fall and spring, yes, they are often even far milder, but because they so quickly and unexpectedly follow in the midst of a very warm day of 15 to 20 degrees temperature. Thus the rapid passage from warm to cold is very severe for people, and one can, if one is not on guard, easily take cold and following this an illness such as catarrh, fever, and the like. Therefore one must never dress too lightly during the local winters, no matter how warm it may be, even if one has to perspire some, still one must always keep warmly dressed. The spring, which already seems to begin here with the end of February, takes on
